| | Running in a crowd of 6000+ people was quite an experience. Of course, I ran out of gas at about mile 5 in the half marathon. But I had to finish, to collect the support monies that were pledged to me, to fund the medical mission trip in october. It was a bit like lamaze class. Concentrate on the next breath. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. Some of the locals were out on the street to cheer us on, with some posters that said exactly this.
Mile 6 was a unique experience. After the first hour of running, with my form and posture going to pot, I experienced a sudden onset of clarity in my mind. I always thought that runner's high was the elation after the long run. But this was very unusual and interesting. This lasted for about 2 minutes before I was reminded of the dull pain in my legs.
The encouragement from strangers who stood at the corners to cheer us on was really helpful. It's a shame that we don't do more to encourage one another on "normal" days. The encouraging words from my supporters came to mind also, as I plodded on.
Through it all, I was able to keep a slightly worse than 10 minute per mile pace. Much better than the LA marathon of 3 years ago.
